Hand pulled rickshaws once a prominent sight on the streets of the ‘city of joy’ will soon bid a silent farewell to the people of Kolkata. The prohibition on hand-pulled rickshaws was formalized on Monday, with the West Bengal Assembly passing the Calcutta Hackney Carriage (Amendment) Bill, 2006. Over the years hand pulled rickshaws assumed a significance of its own and were considered a suitable means of transport for negotiating the narrow and dingy lanes of Kolkata. During heavy downpours that resulted in massive water logging in Kolkata streets, people relied heavily on this unique means of transport for moving from one place to another with ease while the more modern mechanized means of transport proved ineffective in coping with the situation. The rickshaws were particularly favored by the infirm and the elderly for traveling at a leisurely pace to the destinations of their choices though not for great distances. With the government deciding to clamp a ban on this slow moving means of transport, Kolkata will certainly assume a new look with the human machine ceasing to exist.

The death of Mahadeb Majumdar in a drunken revelry in his friend’s house in Krishnanagar in West Bengal, during the celebration of the latter’s marriage anniversary is a grim reminder of the fact that such wild parties which have become quite popular among the society’s youth can only lead to misery and sorrow. Mohar Saha and his wife Saraswati had invited some of their friends to their house to celebrate their marriage anniversary in style. The invitees numbering ten became drunk after consuming liquor served to them. While the guests played cards and indulged in drunken revelry, Saraswati was busy in the kitchen preparing snacks for the visitors. As liquor flowed in abundance one of the invitees Mahadeb Majumdar, who happened to be a friend of Mohar Saha entered the kitchen and embraced Saraswati. An infuriated Mohar who witnessed the incident involving his wife, killed his wife’s tormentor in a fit of rage. What started as a joyous occasion soon turned sad.

Drunken parties and revelries organized by people as a way of entertaining guests and acquaintances are fraught with danger as people under the influence of liquor inevitably fail to react logically to situations and circumstances and indulge in activities which they can possibly never imagine to commit while they are in their normal senses.

The death of a man on his way to office during a Trinamool Congress sponsored Bandh in West Bengal on Friday is a stark reminder of the irresponsible behavior that characterizes the majority of followers of most of the present day political parties in India. The incident occurred when Trinamool supporters hurled brickbats at a state bus on the Malda-Cooch Behar route at a crossroads on the fringes of Raiganj town in North Bengal.

‘Might is right’’ seems to be the motto of most of the political parties who care little for human values and virtues. Human life has little significance for them and attaining their political aim seems to be their basic objective.

As a conscientious citizen Pranay Das, 58, a cashier in a state government department thought if fit to report for duty unable to justify his absence on a bandh day when many people prefer to lock themselves in the secure confinement of their houses. Nowadays bandhs are called at the slightest pretext by most of the political parties in India with the basic objective of gaining political mileage and violence, it seems, is the only means of enforcing them according to the so called principles that guide most of the contemporary political parties in our country.

The death of 14 Indian policemen in a land mine ambush near Bokaro town about 130 km from Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand state once again brings to the fore the vulnerability of the law keepers against surreptitious attacks that insurgents resort to in order to target them.

The Maoists who are waging a battle for a communist state in parts of India have sporadically targeted police personnel with a fair degree of success in their 20 year struggle for a communist state in parts of India.

The Maoist insurgency has so far claimed 6,000 lives including a number of policemen who have been killed in violent land mine attacks or Maoist onslaughts on police outposts. The Maoists who have their strongholds in inhospitable and inaccessible terrains find it easy to target police personnel during routine patrol or when raids are conducted to nab the Maoists from their hideouts in far flung areas.

Nirvana’s phenomenal 1991 single “Smells Like Teen Spirit” has triumphed over hits from Madonna, Britney Spears and U2 to be labeled the unsurpassed pop song in 20 years by Britain’s Q Magazine.

In its November issue, which marks Q’s 20th anniversary, the publication embarked on spotting the leading 20 singles of the previous two decades. Their selection varies from pop icons like Britney Spears’ ‘... Baby,

One More Time,” and Outkast’s “Hey Ya” to The Prodigy’s punk/techno mix “The Firestarter” and Guns N’ Roses’ hard-edged rock ballad, “Sweet Child O’ Mine.”

“The thing about ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit,’ was that it was a defining period in rock music. It altered everything,” observed Q magazine deputy editor Gareth Grundy regarding the sensational Nirvana hit and added,’ It put heavy music back on the map in the early 90’s, really, that combination of punk-rock anger and the heavy Black Sabbath 70’s metal. It was something new. Sulky kids everywhere loved Nirvana and continue to do so.”

Egypt’s leading Muslim clerics have endeavored to dissociate Islam from the custom of female genital mutilation, saying the religion does not require it.

The chief of the al-Azhar mosque, Sunni Islam’s highest authority, told a recent meeting in Cairo that the custom, also recognized as female circumcision, was not mandatory.

Egypt’s principal official cleric, Ali Gomaa, said the Prophet Mohammad had not circumcised his daughters.

Female genital disfigurement is extensive in parts of Africa and the Middle East.

The custom, which characteristically entails surgically cutting off the clitoris of a young girl, has been disapproved of as a violation on the rights of women and a menace to their health.

Parents who back the procedure claim that it assists in thwarting licentious behavior in their daughters.

Genital mutilation or female circumcision frequently deprives women of feeling in their sexual organs.

Muhammad Sayyid Tantawi, the principal scholar at Cairo’s al-Azhar mosque, told the meeting that from a religious viewpoint, he does not have possession of any concrete backing that asserts that circumcision is a must for women.

An individual’s every day cup of coffee could in actuality be of great advantage to his or her health. The tannins other than antioxidants that are present unaffectedly in coffee are acknowledged to battle free radicals and additional assaults on the body. Coffee, in which several defensive antioxidants are present, is also acknowledged to reduce the danger of asthma attacks.
Antioxidants are chemical compounds that protect the body’s cells from the damaging results of oxidation. They help in preserving the immune system, and hence, may lessen the danger of both cancers in addition to heart diseases.
